LinkedIn has grown to be the most popular professional network channel in the world. No wonder given the possibilities it offers, it can drastically determine the speed and direction of your career. Needless to say, it’s a great personal branding tool.
If someone had told me ten years ago that in 2018 I would release a book about personal branding in IT I’d at least have raised my eyebrows.
Only 8 years ago, I lived in an orphanage and struggled to get by at most of my subjects in school. At weekends I was DJing to make some cash on the side. The outlook was rather gloomy, huh? But here it is, the fruit of my hard work. It’s finally out! After over a year of planning and a few months of intense writing.
Creating an awesome product that solves our daily problems or simply makes life easier is pure value. Creating such product, backing it up with your personal brand and building a community around it – is an art. The art of making business in 2018 internet era. This is what Leo Bessam, the founder of Plutio did. His business model and the strategy behind creating it inspired me to write this post.
If back in 1998, you magically hibernated and then woke up now, 20 years later in 2018, you might feel slightly overwhelmed. The world is changing at the highest pace ever, with the internet being arguably the biggest contributor to that phenomenon. Marketing has evolved into entirely different form and became prevalent on the internet. The same happened with personal branding which is currently mainly associated with using the internet and social media platforms.
Back when I was 15 living in an orphanage, I would have not dreamed my life would be as good as it is now. All I wished then was that the daily nightmare would be over and that someday I would have a pretty good life. A couple of years passed—what I consider to be the darkest period of my life. And then, when I had reached what felt like the bottom, something unusual happened. Trivial as it sounds, I had a striking realization. An epiphany. If life is on the way to finish me anyway, why not put all my time and energy into achieving something great? Something that’s bigger than my problems, bigger than me. From that day, things slowly started to change…
For personal branding, there was arguably no such decade in our history before. Especially year 2010. The emergence of Instagram. Amongst all big social media platforms utilised to promote one’s brand, Instagram is the newest. It took only 8 years for it to become absolutely pervasive and trend-setting.
Whether we own a business, do freelancing, or perhaps just work 9-5, one thing holds true for us all. We all have a certain personal brand. That is to say- perception of ourselves in the eyes of people who we provide value or service to. The image we work for every day.
In the middle of work, a simple yet interesting question came to my mind as my colleague started a discussion about quality or work. “Which one is more important, working hard or working efficiently?” Did you ever ask yourself the same question?
